run Forrest! run

posted on Monday, January 29th, 2007 at 12:15 am

Well, according to my February 5, 2007 issue of Time Magazine, there are at least 20 candidates in the mix for the 2008 presidential election. For those of you not here in America, our presidential election happens every four years, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. So, in 2008, that’s November 4. So why so many candidates 21 months out? Who knows?

What concerns me about these candidates who are jumping into the race so early is that most of them are currently holding public office. And it’s well known that when a sitting politician runs for office, they set aside their current responsibilities in order to allow them time to campaign. So what’s wrong with that? I’ll tell you.

We elect our leaders to do a job, not for a fraction of their term, but for the whole term. If I vote for someone to represent me for 4 years, I expect them to represent me for four years, not 2 years and then 2 years running for re-election. Now yes, I know that politicians do need time to campaign if they’re running for office. But 21 months?

We need to have a time limit, and just not allow anyone to declare their candacy more than 10 or 12 months out. Then it’s an even playing field. Everyone in at the same time. This also saves us from an extra year listening to all that crap on the TV and radio.
