racquetball hurts

posted on Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 at 10:40 pm

my arm in a castCrap, I broke my arm playing racquetball last Tuesday night. My wife Tricia and I play doubles quite a bit with Paul and Lisa Konshak. Well, Paul had just hit a hard shot against the front wall. I quickly broke to my right behind Paul to make my shot. But Paul was moving back and I just tripped over him. But I fell pretty hard.

My racquet hit the floor first, then I fell on top of the racquet with my right arm in between. It was immediately quite painful. I actually played a 3 or 4 more points, but each time I hit the ball, I felt a shooting pain in my arm, so I had to stop.

Tricia took me to the hospital where they did x-rays. They had already given me morphine via IV but the x-rays were still the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. I can’t imagine what it would have been like without the morphine. They had my arm twisted in ways that it just couldn’t move. The x-ray showed a broken radius. So the ER doctor put my arm in one of those half casts, with my arm wrapped in with an ace bandage.

I went in to work on Wednesday, where I was reduced to typing with just one hand, my left hand. Of course I’m right-handed.

On Thursday, I went to see an orthopedic surgeon. The first thing he did was take the cast off and throw it away. The good news is that I don’t need surgery. I’m just keeping my arm in a sling to keep it still and allow time to heal. But I can still use it on a limited basis. At least I can still type. Over the next 3 weeks, I should gain full motion again with no pain.

I can’t wait to get back out on the court again.
