I stepped on the scale back on May 3, as I do on ocassion, and the needle moved around to an all-time high of “255”. And I figured, that’s about enough. So I decided to get healthy.
I used to be in pretty good shape, 25 years ago. Tennis was my game. I played in high school, and as I got into my early 20s, I continued to play in city park & rec tournaments. When I moved to California at 22, I still played. But, as we had kids and got further along into my career, exercise took a back seat and eventually it just wasn’t there anymore. I sit at a desk all day, so I needed to do something drastic that would change my life.
While losing weight is not my main goal, it is the means to the end. I simply want to be healthy. So what’s the best way to lose weight? I’ve figured out the solution. Four words:
Exercise more, eat less.
That’s it. No calorie counting. No diet. Just exercise more and eat less. So, how have I done that? Again, quite simple.
When it comes to exercising, that’s easy. When you don’t exercise at all, you’ve got no where else to go but up. In my case, I now play racquetball. I used to play many years ago, and I actually started playing off and on again a year or two ago, but now I’m serious about it. I can play at work for free, so I just started asking friends and neighbors and I’ve now got a nice little list of opponents I can play with, including my wife. I now play 2-3 times per week. The key here was to do something I enjoy doing. I had tried running, but that’s just not fun. I really enjoy racqetball and I’m always looking forward to the next time on the court.
When it comes to eating, another easy one. Eat less. That’s it. So, what does that mean? Well, if I used to eat a full bowl of popcorn while watching a movie, I now have a half bowl. Where I used to get a large blizzard at Dairy Queen, I now get a small. It’s important to understand that I don’t care how much less I eat. As long as it’s less than last month. And sometimes “less” actually means more food but healthier. So, instead of having ice cream for dessert at lunch, I’ll sometimes have an apple. Yes, I still have my ice cream and cake and all the crap that’s not good for me. But I have less, or I have it less often. Even if I only eat healthier 2 days out of the month, that’s 2 healthier days than last month.
So, I’m not necessarily trying for a specific goal. I don’t count calories, and I’ve only weighed myself twice since that time on the scale back on May 3. Today, I’m at 235. Cool. What I’m doing is working. I look forward to seeing where I’m at on my 45th birthday in November.
