I have torn down and rebuilt this site several times over the years.
And in so doing, I've decided to remove old and outdated articles.
I don't seem to get around to writing often, but when I do, it's
usually about faith or politics.

In every state throughout the U.S., governors are trying to figure out ways to keep their residents safe during this pandemic. That stands to reason, and Gov. Tony Evers, here in the state of Wisconsin, is no exception. Last year, he issued a stay-at-home order which was then overturned by the Wisconsin Supreme Court because Evers went beyond his authority according to our constitution. At the time, one justice described Evers' order as "the very definition of tyranny."

There's a restaurant on the east side of town that, for many years, was like your typical bar and grill. You could get a good burger or a steak, a beer, you name it. Before or after dinner you could pony up to the bar for a cocktail. I've been there many times. Then a couple of years ago, the owners decided to change it to a Japanese restaurant. I don't eat Japanese food, so I no longer go there. It's not a protest or a boycott. They just changed their product, and I'm no longer part of their target audience.

The wage debate continues. And while elected officials impose their partisan ways on their communities, regular people see first hand that the consequences are real. As a former local elected official, my energies are focused more on the actions of city councils rather than on state and national issues. This real life example from Long Beach, California proves that the political leanings and moral values of your city council matter. Don't worry, while this example is Long Beach, I'll bring this conversation back to De Pere, Wisconsin, where I live, at the end of the article. Please read on.

If you asked me how things were going back when I served on the De Pere City Council (2012-2020), you probably heard me say that one aspect I enjoyed the most was that we were a non-partisan political body. Each of the four times I filed my candidacy paperwork, I never declared a political party; it's officially a non-partisan position. I always felt that when we considered such local items as garbage pickup or snow plowing, your party affiliation doesn't matter.
